(Writed by Queen Christie Z-Pabon - Universal Zulu Nation): Peace! If people keep coming down on the youth for not "paying their dues" in Hip Hop, in the traditional sense, the youth are going to shut them out. Who wants to be down with people who berate you? We WANT them to JOIN us in the culture, not splinter off. Take someone in as your protege (as Fabel suggests) if you want to pass down the culture, traditions, etc. I hope the younger artists can meet authentic, supportive, encouraging mentors who are accomplished and who have been keeping up to date, following the battles, etc. They might run into a few cranky guys, but please remember, that's not the majority! It's not the youths fault that they were born into a different time with advanced technology. I see "some" (definitely not the majority) Hip Hop DJs from the older generations trying to hold the younger ones to certain ideals and criticizing them heavily. But remember, some younger DJs do not have authentic mentors, some have little experience with other elements of the culture, some are simply not interested in certain things like digging, going all vinyl, etc. at this point in their lives etc. In short, they are simply into one thing and that's what they do right now. Hopefully, they will eventually want to learn the history and do more research after they are exposed to the best that element has to offer. Example: Some dancers get into bboying, attracted by the power moves, but then once they are in, they go back and learn the foundations. -- Peace.
